Want to Be a Fireman

Qualifications to apply for a firefighting position with the Vicksburg Fire Department include:

  • Must be a United States citizen.
  • Must be 18 years of age. Proof of age must be present when application is submitted.
  • Must have a valid driver's license when application is submitted.
  • Must have social security card to be photocopied when application is submitted.
  •  Must have a high school diploma or GED. Must have on file, at time of application, an ACT score of 17, or Next Generation ACCUPLACER Reading score of 246, or ACCUPLACER Reading score of 76. A National Registry certified emergency medical technician or paramedic will substitute for the ACT or ACCUPLACER score. Proof of certification must be presented when application is submitted.
  • Must submit to a background check. Must be of good moral character as evidence by background check prior to employment. Cannot have a felony conviction.
  • Must submit to and receive satisfactory psychological evaluation prior to employment.
  • Must submit to a medical physical with drug screen prior to employment.
  • Must be able to perform the duties of a structural fire fighter without limitations.
  • Must pass physical agility test prior to employment.
  • Must have final earned average of no less than 70 percent on civil service examination to be placed on the employment register.

Employees of the Vicksburg Fire Department are afforded several benefits by the City of Vicksburg:

Firefighters work in three shifts (A,B and C) of 24 hours each. Therefore, each firefighter is on duty for 24 hours and then is off for the next 48 hours before returning to work.
