Alderman Thomas TJ Mayfield

Alderman TJ Mayfield proudly serves as the representative for Ward 1, which encompasses the northern district of Vicksburg, Mississippi. He was elected to the position on May 30, 2024, to complete the unexpired term of his late father, Alderman Michael Mayfield, Sr., and was officially sworn into office on June 19, 2024.

Since being elected, Alderman Mayfield has served as a board member of the Central Mississippi Planning and Development District. He is the founder of several impactful local programs, including DREAM (Development and Rehabilitation through Education and Mentorship), the Headquarters Barbershop Back-to-School Book Drive, and the City of Vicksburg Intergenerational Health Council. He also contributes his expertise as a member of the Vicksburg-Warren College and Career Academies Advisory Board.

A lifelong resident of Vicksburg, Alderman Mayfield is an honor graduate of Warren Central High School. He went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Social Science Education and a Master’s degree in Workforce Education Leadership from Alcorn State University. His professional background includes service as an educator in the Vicksburg-Warren School District, where he launched several student-centered initiatives such as Gentlemen of Intelligence, Valor, and Excellence (GIVE), the Gator Career Closet, and Razor-Sharp Reading, all of these are these programs designed to promote mentorship, career readiness, and literacy among youth. As an educator, Alderman Mayfield was a member of the Mississippi Teacher Advisory Council, the Alcorn State University Teacher Advisory Council, and a member of the Mississippi Collective.

Beyond education, Alderman Mayfield has worked tirelessly in the health and nonprofit sectors. He is the youngest Executive Director in the history of the Mississippi Kidney Foundation, in addition to leading the Advancing Health Equity in Chronic Kidney Disease initiative in partnership with the Mississippi State Department of Health. In this role, he earned appointments to several statewide health and policy bodies, including the Mississippi State Health Improvement Plan for Diabetes and Youth Mentorship Taskforce, the Mississippi Alliance for Nonprofit and Philanthropy Health Affinity Board, and the Alport Syndrome Foundation’s Emerging Leadership Council, where he served as Advocacy Chair. He also served as Project Manager for the Care 4 Mississippi Medicaid Expansion Coalition.

Alderman Mayfield is the proud father of his son, Tahj, and was the devoted husband of the former Madalene Barksdale. His deep commitment to faith, education, and civic leadership is reflected in his many affiliations. He is a deacon at Mt. Pisgah Hickory Tree M.B. Church and a member of the Mississippi Economic Council Leadership Mississippi. He formerly served as President of the Vicksburg-Warren Alcorn Alumni Chapter and is a member of the Mississippi Teacher Advisory Council, The Mississippi Collective, Blacks in Government, and the Mississippi Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials, the Congressional Black Caucus Institute Bootcamp. He holds honorary membership in the National Youth Leadership Forum: National Security and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. For his work in the community, Alderman has received numerous awards, including being a recipient of the Mississippi Business Journal Top 40 under 40 award, the E.T. Hawkins Outstanding Young Alcornite of the Year Award, Mt. Pisgah Hickory Tree M.B. Church Inspire Award, River City Nupes Public Service Award. and the Bethel AME Church Community Leadership Award

Alderman Mayfield remains deeply committed to public service, youth empowerment, health equity, and the continued progress of the City of Vicksburg and the State of Mississippi.
