House Speaker Philip GunnSpeaker of the House, Philip Gunn visted the River City as part of his statewide listening tour. Education and economic development where just a few of the topics discussed by area residents during the forum with Rep. Gunn Wednesday at the Vicksburg Convention Center. More than 100 area residents and leaders, including Rep. Alex Monsour, state Sen. Briggs Hopson III, Aldermen Mayfield and Thompson, and Mayor Flaggs, attended the one-hour program to voice their thoughts and concerns on issues that affect Vicksburg and Warren County.

Miss America LogoThe Vicksburg Child and Parent (CAP) Center is proud to host Miss America 2013 Mallory Hagan on Saturday, July 27 in Vicksburg, Miss. Mallory Hagan's platform is Stop it Now-Child Sexual Abuse. She has teamed up with the Vicksburg CAP Center to raise awareness and funds to help prevent this epidemic in the state of Mississippi. 

Wednesday, August 21, 2013: Mayor Flaggs and other area residents attended a riverboat dinner cruise aboard the MV Mississippi. The event was hosted by the Mississippi River Commission represented by President and Member Major General John W. Peabody.

MissMississippiPageantThe 2013 Miss Mississippi Pageant is back in Vicksburg starting July 10, 2013. Preliminary rounds are Wednesday through Friday with each contestant group competing in talent, swimwear, evening wear, and an onstage question. On Saturday night, the top 10 is announced and contestants compete in all four categories. At the conclusion of Saturday's round, Miss Mississippi will be crowned!

 

Mayor George Flaggs, Jr.Miss America, Mallory Hagan, came to Vicksburg to help raise money for the Child and Parent Center. Her platform is child abuse prevention, which is a major part of what the Vicksburg CAP Center does. Mayor George Flaggs was on hand to welcome Miss America to Vicksburg and presented her with the "Key" to the City. Erma Driver, director of the Vicksburg CAP Center, said she is hoping that Miss America's visit will help bring awareness of child abuse and neglect to Vicksburg.

City offices will be closed July 4th and 5th in observance of Independence Day.

cityhallangelsmallOn July 25, 2013, at their regularly scheduled board meeting the Board of Mayor and Aldermen voted unanimously to approve a new organizational chart for city departments. The new structure brings the total number of division heads to nine. Those nine division are responsible for about forty-five different departments. Departments were realigned so that communication and overall efficiency could be improved. "We tried to realign departments by function." said Mayor George Flaggs Jr.

The City of Vicksburg presents a Fireworks Extravaganza "Red White and Blues" featuring Mr. Sipp "The Mississippi Blues Child". The event starts at 7:00 pm. Fireworks show starts at at 9:00 pm. There will be a special tribute to Willie Dixon (July 1, 1915- January 29, 1992).

Mississippi Tax HolidayThe annual Sales Tax Holiday begins12:01 a.m. Friday, July 26, 2013, and ends 12:00 midnight Saturday, July 27, 2013. The items exempt from sales tax during the Sales Tax Holiday are identical to those items exempt in prior years. Clothing and footwear items, meant to be worn next to the body and cost less than $100 per item, are exempt from sales tax during this period. Accessories such as jewelry, handbags, wallets, watches, backpacks, and similar items do not qualify for the Sales Tax Holiday. Cleats and items worn in conjunction with an athletic or recreational activity are other sample items not eligible. School supplies and computers are not included.

Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves and his family will welcome Miss America 2013 Mallory Hagan to Vicksburg at a breakfast Saturday. The Vicksburg Child and Parent Center plans a day of events to raise awareness and funds to prevent child abuse. The breakfast will be at 8 a.m. at the Vicksburg Convention Center and is open to the public. Cost is $25. Hagan is in Mississippi to promote her platform as Miss America, "Stop It Now-Child Sexual Abuse." "The work by the Vicksburg Child and Parent Center has made a difference in many lives, and I hope this event will raise awareness of their services and child abuse prevention programs around the state," Lt. Gov. Reeves said.

On Saturday, May 18, 2013, Vicksburg National Military Park will present a special Sesquicentennial ranger program on the Union Assaults against Vicksburg, as well as the beginning of siege operations, from 7:00pm until 9:00pm at the park's Visitor Center on Clay Street. A question and answer session will follow the presentation. Doors will open at 6:30pm. This event is open to the public and will be free of charge.

There will also be ranger walks and programs at the actual locations of the assaults and heaviest fighting on the anniversary dates and times as follows:
