Mayor Flaggs and Alderman Mayfield spoke to about 30 students from the Dallas Public School District, sharing their personal experiences as African-American politicians. The students were participating in the Martin Luther King Educational Freedom Ride Tour. It is a commemoration of fifty years of "Dreaming" by continuing the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Medgar Evers, and civil rights. Organized by Dr. Jerry Chambers (educator of 50 years, Dallas Public Schools), the Freedom Ride Tour replicates the 1961 Freedom Ride. Students will be gathering pertinent information to help analyze their beliefs and values. This information will emphasize the importance of attaining critical decision-making skills to empower them, and help them acquire a sense of political efficiency.
