recycle logoThe City of Vicksburg has been awarded Local Government Solid Waste Assistance Grant funding from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality to implement a pilot Curbside Recycling Program. The program is a voluntary recycling pilot program in the area between Chambers Street and East Avenue. All homes in the area bounded on the west by Cherry Street, east by Eisenhower Drive, north by East Avenue and the South by Chambers Street will be given an opportunity to opt-in the program. There will be no cost to the residents that participate.

Marie Thompson, director of policy for the city, said the program is funded by a $25,000 Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality grant. “The program will run for a year, possibly longer, depending on its success,” she said. “Participants will be given two recycling bins, blue for paper and green for No. 1 and No. 2 plastics, like soft drink and milk containers and liquid soap.”

As a part of this program, the City will provide two (2) recycling containers per household in the pilot area, one GREEN container for plastic(s) and one BLUE container for paper(s). Starting on Monday, April 16, 2012, you are encouraged to call 601-801-5377, listen to instructions for participation and leave your name, address, and phone number if you are interested in participating in this pilot program. Meetings will be held on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 and Thursday, April 26, 2012 in the City of Vicksburg Annex, City Board room, at 5:30 p.m. to review and sign up for this pilot program. Residents in the pilot area who are unable to attend the April 24 or 26, 2012 meetings will have another opportunity to sign up on Saturday, May 5, 2012, at Glenwood Circle Park from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.




The geographical boundaries of this pilot program are:


East Avenue on the north, Eisenhower on the east, Chambers and Vicklan on the south and Cherry Street to the west. These boundaries will include East Avenue, Evans Alley,Frederick Street, Broadhill Drive, Baum Street, Halpins Alley, MacArthur Drive, MacArthur Place, Eisenhower Drive, Glenwood Circle, Vicklan Street, Skipland Drive, Skipland Place, Edna Drive, Wilson Street, Chambers Street, as well as the east side of the 2100 block of Cherry Street.
