Washington Street Bridge CeremonyDespite the cold, drizzling rain and a nearly three year wait, the Washington Street Bridge is open for traffic once again. The bridge closed in 2009 because of bank erosion and was replaced by a tunnel and roadbed.

The bridge is the main north-south corridor connecting downtown Vicksburg with Interstate 20.

City, County and State dignitaries attended the event. Mississippi Transportation Commissioner for the Central District, Dick Hall, spoke to the crowd who braved the elements. Mayor Paul Winfield expressed his gratitude to all who had a part in the completion of the bridge.

The Vicksburg and Warren Central high school bands played for the event.

After the ribbon cutting, Mayor Winfield lead a parade of vehicles, which included a number of classic antique automobiles, over the newly opened bridge.
