Vicksburg in History: In the early days of Vicksburg's history, the Mississippi River was the highway of Mid-America and the lifeblood of Vicksburg. The Port of Vicksburg was a safe haven for barges, towboats and steamboats. The river carved a new channel in 1876 leaving Vicksburg without a port until 1902 when the Yazoo River was diverted into the old river bed. This scene, c. 1907, is a reminder that Vicksburg was born on the river.
