Water Treatment

The City of Vicksburg Water Treatment Plant operates a water quality laboratory that works to maintain the purity and quality of the City of Vicksburg's water supply. They work to keep elements and mineral content in drinking water; such as lead, lime, and chlorine stabilized below acceptable levels and are always happy to answer customer concerns with water quality.

Water quality is a concern of all citizens throughout City of Vicksburg and Mississippi Department of Health. To that end, the City of Vicksburg Water Treatment Plant performs water quality inspections around the City of Vicksburg water supply to insure that all water, treated or otherwise, does not exceed acceptable levels of potentially harmful minerals or metals, particularly lead. Water QualityDespite our best efforts to control water quality and remove lead from the water supply, levels in some buildings can be high. To find out whether you need to take action in your own home, you should have your drinking water tested by the Water Treatment Plant or a private laboratory. Only a regulated test can determine whether your water is unsafe since you cannot see, taste, or smell lead in water.

If the water test indicates that your tap water contains lead above 15 parts per billion, you should consult a plumber or our office to find the source of the problem. In the interim, when the water has not been running for 6 hours or more, let cold water run from the tap for 15 to 30 seconds before using it for drinking or cooking. Use this initial water flush to wash dishes or water plants, so as to conserve water. Most often, the cause of lead-rich water is pipes that are illegally joined with lead solder. In this case, notify the plumber who did the work and request that he or she replace the lead solder with lead-free solder. Lead solder looks dull gray, and when scratched with a key looks shiny.

For more information about water quality or to request a water quality inspection, contact the City of Vicksburg Water Treatment Plant located at 601 Haining Road, 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, or call them at (601) 634-4541.

Whether you are experiencing cloudy or dirty water, or your water has developed an unusual odor or taste, let the department know immediately so that they may investigate the situation.

If the problem is easily recognizable, the department will give you advice by phone. For example, water may occasionally become discolored due to water main breaks, fires that use a high volume of water, or problems at the water plant. These problems usually show up in your home as muddy water. This water is not unsafe to drink. It merely contains sediments due to sudden changes in pressure in the system. When the cause of the problem is corrected, the sediments will be flushed from the system. Do not wash clothes because the sediments may cause stains.

If the problem appears more serious, or cannot be solved by phone, you will receive a free residential water audit, in which a department official will perform quality tests on your water, learn about your water habits and uses, and observe and test for water leaks or problems in your household and service line. The problem may be from a broken pipe, pipe corrosivity, or even backflow that is causing unsafe drinking water to mix with the potable water supply.
