Tourism & Attractions

Vicksburg is a place bursting at the seams with local culture, character, art, entertainment and outdoor adventure. With sweeping views of the Mississippi River, Vicksburg perfectly blends Southern culture and heritage with exciting modern-day attractions.

From five world-class casinos and upscale shopping, dining and spas to one-of-a-kind Mississippi River adventures and some of the most fascinating historic sites, architecture and antebellum mansions in the nation, Vicksburg offers an authentic Southern experience you don't want to miss.

A tremendously exciting project is underway in the City of Vicksburg. A group of local citizens have organized the Mural Development Committee to have murals painted on the floodwall at the city waterfront depicting the history of Vicksburg. The floodwall at Levee Street is located two blocks west of Washington Street near the Old Train Depot.

The first mural was unveiled on April 12, 2002. World renowned muralist, Robert Dafford depicts the Vicksburg waterfront, set in the late 1800's with steamboats and the city skyline in the background. Followed by his painting of four additional murals: "Washington Street - Circa 1912", "The Making of a City", "Joseph Biedenharn and the Bottling of Coca-Cola" and "Teddy Roosevelt Bear Hunt".

The vision of the Mural Committee is to have a history timeline of Vicksburg starting with the Choctaw Indians in the early 1700's through the present. There are 14 sections of floodwall between the entrance and exit to the river.

As of June 2003, five murals have been completed with sponsorships for an additional four. Now in progress this fall 2003, are two murals "Sisters of Mercy" and "Early Exploration/Fort Nogales". Following in the spring of 2004 will be the painting of "African/American History" and "Jefferson Davis".

Each mural has or will have a bronze plaque telling the story behind the mural and giving the name of the sponsor or sponsors.

Funds from mural sponsorship are contributed through the Chamber of Commerce and are tax deductible.

If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact the Chamber of Commerce, 2020 Mission 66, phone number, (601) 636-1012 or Mural Committee Chairman, Nellie Caldwell, phone number (601) 636-5893.
