Recreation

The Parks and Recreation Department is charged with providing quality recreational facilities to the citizens of Vicksburg. We currently have 13 full-time employees, nine of which are maintenance workers and over 100 part-time employees.

We maintain 15 playgrounds, 8 baseball fields, 2 youth softball fields, 3 adult softball fields, 1 Olympic pool and 10 tennis courts. Some of our activities include baseball (spring and fall), softball, basketball, arts programs, volleyball, swimming, flag football, lifeguard certification, umpire clinics and playground activities

Youth ProgramsThe City of Vicksburg Parks and Recreation Department offers a wide variety of youth programs tailored to the interests and needs of youths under 15. Some are directly sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department, while others are offered in conjunction with another organization or instructor. These programs are offered in addition to the regular complement of leisure and athletic programs for youth offered by the Parks and Recreation. Some of the special programs include Summer Playground Camp where youth participate in games, exercise, swimming, and crafts for anywhere from a week to two months throughout the summer. These programs are designed to provide safe and fun activities for children ages 6 to 13.

Registration for this camp is not needed. The first camp will start in June. The site for this camp will be announced. A City of Vicksburg Parks and Recreation Department program guide gives a complete list of youth programs that are available at each registration session. Fees for each program vary.

In addition to these opportunities, the Parks and Recreation department also host a City-Wide Easter Egg Hunt, Senior's Prom, Valentine's Dance, Harvest Festival, Art in the Park Contest, and other one time events, and can even help you start a program of your own. BaseballThe City of Vicksburg Parks and Recreation Department sponsors a youth baseball program at the Halls Ferry Park. The league is composed of 5 age group divisions open to youths age 5 to 15. The divisions are: Division 1 - 5 to 6 year olds, Division 2 - 7 to 8 year olds, Division 3 - 9 to 10 year olds, Division 4 - 11 to 12 year olds, Division 5 - 13 - 15 year olds. All ages are determined as of July 31 of each year.

Registration for youth fall baseball is held in August of each year. Usually teams are formed according to school. Play usually begins in September and last until October. Games are usually played on Saturday. Teams typically play 2 games per week and practice 1 other day per week. All games and practices are held at Halls Ferry Park.

VolleyballThe City of Vicksburg Parks and Recreation Department sponsors 2 adult volleyball leagues at the Jackson Street Community Center and the Riverfront Park. Adults age 16 and over can choose to play in either the men's, women's, co-ed, or church division or in the two-person sand volleyball league by registering as a team for a specific division.

Registration is held in January of each year for hardcourt volleyball and in March for sand volleyball. Fees vary according to the division the team will play in. Hardcourt volleyball season usually begins in March and last until April, followed by postseason tournaments. Teams typically play 2 games per week and practice 1 other day per week. Most games and practices are held at Jackson Street Community Center. Sand volleyball season usually begins in April and last until May, followed by postseason tournaments. Teams typically play 2 games (TBA) per week, held at the Riverfront Park. Practices are set up individually by each team.

Youth Athletic ProgramsThe City of Vicksburg Parks and Recreation Department offers a wide variety of athletic programs and opportunities for youth. Some are directly sponsored by the Parks and Recreation department while others are offered in conjunction with another organization. Traditional leagues such as baseball and softball are always popular, while newer youth programs like football and tennis have become integral components of the department.

Registration for youth athletic programs occurs 3 times a year in February, June and August. Tennis LessonsThe City of Vicksburg Parks and Recreation Department offers tennis lessons and workshops throughout the year at the lighted tennis courts located at Halls Ferry Park. Lessons are open to citizens of all ages and skill levels and are taught by qualified instructors.

There are group classes available periodically for beginner, intermediate, and advanced players. The fee is set by the instructor but typically cost around $20.00 (individual private lesson) plus $5.00 for each additional person and $50.00 per session plus $5.00 for each additional person of 6-10 people for each 1 hour session. Lessons consist of learning and polishing the basic skills of the forehand, backhand, lob, serve, and net play. Tennis balls and racquets are provided as needed. There are also tennis workshops available from time to time. These consist of more personal or specialized training, and lessons are typically concentrated over a shorter period of time. Individual lessons are also available with a tennis professional. These are arranged by appointment only and are recommended for players of at least moderate skill level. Workshops and individual lessons will vary in cost.
